Helen Raper Crafford died on April 28, 2012 at the age of 87, the last of 9 siblings. She was born on May 20, 1924, in Wilson County, North Carolina, the daughter of sharecropper Mallie Elmer Raper and Martha Lutoria Raper. Helen was a resident of Lee Hall and Williamsburg for more than 60 years. She was a loving wife and mother who trained as a registered nurse in the WWII Cadet Nurse Corps at Lewis Gale Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia, worked at the Marine Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, and also worked as a school nurse in the Newport News Public Schools. She was a longtime member of Lebanon Christian Church in Lee Hall.
Mrs. Crafford is survived by her husband, Joseph C. Crafford of Williamsburg; sons, J. Carter Crafford, Jr. and his wife Lynn of Fairfax, Virginia, and Glenn W. Crafford and his wife Susan of Darien, Connecticut; grandsons, Ian Crafford and Nathan Crafford of Fairfax County, Virginia, and James Crafford of Darien, Connecticut; granddaughters, Shelley Ruano of Stamford, Connecticut, and Elizabeth Crafford and Meredith Crafford of Darien, Connecticut; and half-brothers, Chris Raper and Rex Raper of Wilson, North Carolina.
A burial ceremony for family and friends will be held at Williamsburg Memorial Park Cemetery at 1PM on Tuesday, May 1, 2012.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the building fund at Lebanon Christian Church, 409 Yorktown Road, Newport News, VA 23603.
