RYAN, Arthur Eugene, 90, of Williamsburg, died Saturday, June 16. He was born December 20, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York and attended St. John's University in Brooklyn followed by medical school at Creighton University in Omaha, NE, graduating in 1947. He married Margaret (Madge) Touhey, a girl he loved at first sight, on July 4, 1953. He entered the United States Air Force Medical Corps in 1952, serving at bases in France, Alaska, South Carolina, and Panama, ending his Air Force career in Alexandria, VA, as Deputy Assistant Surgeon General for the Air Force. During this time he was detached to NASA as Chief of Medical Support for Advanced Space Missions. Upon retirement from the Air Force in 1973, the Ryan family moved to Richmond where Dr. Ryan served as the Medical Director for Philip Morris for 11 years. After retiring from Philip Morris, the Ryans moved to Naples, FL and later to Memphis, TN. Retirement did not suit Dr. Ryan and the Ryans returned to Virginia, settling in Williamsburg where he continued to practice medicine until the age of 88.

He was a supporter of many organizations including St. Bede Catholic Church, St. Bridget Church, the Hibernian Society, the Wounded Warrior Program, and the Society for the Blind.

He was predeceased by his parents, Francis X. Ryan and Jane Gage Ryan, and his brother, Francis X. Ryan Jr.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Margaret Touhey Ryan; daughter, Kathleen Ryan Armstrong of Williamsburg; son, Arthur Eugene Ryan, Jr. and his wife, Jan Hodges, of Richmond; two nephews, Tom Ryan and wife, Anne Cooney, of Roanoke, and Frank Ryan and wife, Judie, of Stow, OH; three grandchildren, Sarah Armstrong Moore and her husband, Daniel Moore, of North Augusta, SC, and Charles and James Ryan of Tazewell, VA; two great-nieces, Sara Ryan Motley and her husband, James, and Julia Ryan; and many dearly loved family and friends.

He is remembered by all who knew him as intellectual and curious, with a keen sense of humor and a kind and loving heart. He delighted in spending time with family and friends. Many of his younger relatives and friends looked up to him as a role model and father figure.

A Funeral Mass will be offered Friday, June 22, 11:00 a.m. at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg, VA. Interment will be September 14, 2012 at 3 PM at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you remember Dr. Ryan by sharing a smile or a joke with friends, or by doing a kind deed for someone.
